Country Folk

Rhody Thomas

Monday 9am to 12pm

I grew up in Castlecrag, that hippie trouble spot of the lower North Shore. Mucked about in Perth, where I was hired by a troupe of travelling actors, presenting plays to the schoolkids around WA. Met the Slim Dusty Show at Lake Grace (Google it, Mate!), where I recognised Australian Country Music as local folk music, which I had been singing in Perth coffee shops. I listened and heard 3 chords and honesty, with great story-telling and considered melody; what more could a person want?

Later, battled through Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma with the help of my sisters, then Joined Northside in 2005 as a clerk, eventually graduated to my stand-in Station Manager.

But my wife was offered a job in Taree, so we escaped to a tree change on 10 acres with a creek at the bottom of the land. Grew our own eggs, fruit, vegetables and meat – yep, we watched the calves being borne, fed them to maturity and killed them and ate them.
Finally, fully retired and back in Sydney, re-joined Northside Radio and, with the death of our loved Georgie Cadwallader, was offered the time slot that Smokey Dawson had at 2NSB – the last station Smokey originated his nationally broadcast show.
