On Ron’s Golden Oldies this week…
Ron is featuring pioneer Rock and Roll artist Alan Dale on the program this Thursday.
Streaming Live on Northside Radio FM99.3 Sydney’s leading Community Radio Station.
“He was a founding member of the Echidnas”
Alan had started Sydney’s very first rock ‘n’ roll dance at the Maroubra Memorial Hall with his band back in February of 1957. Jam packed with teenagers every week, it not only saw his own popularity surge but helped launch the career of his friend, Johnny O’Keefe, with whom he had shared digs at Holsworthy for a stint of compulsory army training.
After his training he went back to his trade as a compositor, and continued his friendship with John, as the printing shop he was employed by, was above R.M. O’Keefe’s furniture shop in Castlereagh Street.
Alan continued in the early Sydney Rock n Roll scene with his group The House Rockers. He started many RnR dances in the late 50s among the Sydney pub and club scene. He released several records in those years and was instrumental in launching the career of many later artists around Sydney.
He was a founding member of the Echidnas – The Australian Order of Comedians and with the Arrows luncheons, its offshoot for music entertainers. Both drew hundreds of participants and the former raised large amounts for charity. He was always ready to help with any fundraising events, charities and Aussie entertainment promotions around Australia.
Sadly we lost Alan in October 2022 but his influence and contribution to the Aussie entertainment industry is immeasurable and lasting.
Ron will play Alans hits during the show, along with many more of the early Rock & Roll pioneers.
